The lake sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in Canada – it can grow to more than two metres in length and weigh more than 140 kilograms. With an outer armour of bony plates, bones made of cartilage and a shark-like tail, sturgeon resemble fossils from the Upper Cretaceous period, more than 100 million years ago.

Species of sturgeon are also found in the Caspian Sea. Iran has participated in efforts to build sustainable fishing industry. This has included the release of more than 123 million juvenile sturgeon and bony fishes into the Caspian Sea in Guilan Province.
